Vintage Inspired Locker

I am so excited to share this makeover with you today! Did you see the preview on Instagram? Follow me to keep up with all my sneak peaks!

Our home has been in overhaul mode over the last few weeks. Not in getting the nursery ready, as you might think, but in getting the big brother ready! We moved KJ into a larger room, and I wanted to make sure that he was settled there before his old room was transformed with girly goodness. Besides, baby girl is pretty content with her living quarters as of now ;).

I wanted to go with a theme that would A. be relevant and AWESOME to my precocious boy, and B. easily transition into a bigger-big-boy room later on. It's all about superheros and sports right now, so the solution was easy! Superheros now, sports greatness later!

Which brings me to...

I'll get to some of the fun superhero touches in future posts (there is one in particular that I am SO excited to share!), but I started with this and can't wait any longer to show you!

I had my heart set on a real lockers for the little man's room for as long as I had been planning his new room, but the price tag and impracticality of potentially sharp metal doors and shelves in a 3 year old's room left me hesitant to go that route.

While clearing out the room, I was left wondering what to do with an old craft cabinet bought several years before (it screamed, "furniture from my first apartment!"). I considered donating it so many times, but the storage it gave me (no matter how unattractive) always seemed to change my mind and save the piece.

I thought I had a "before" picture, but I couldn't find it. I'm sorry, you'll just have to take my word for it - it was plain Jane all the way. Fake wood, plastic hinges, cardboard backing - the works. The first order of business was upgrading some of the hardware and reinforcing the structure of it, it needs to survive life with my boy after all. Once that was finished, I broke out the spray paint!

I'm a RustOleum fan, so I went went with their Flat Black Primer to start with. I primed the whole thing, inside and out with it. I wanted to leave the inside of the cabinet black, so I went over it with black in a semi-gloss finish after it had plenty of time to dry and set.

What really makes this special is the hammered silver finish. I used Rust-Oleum Hammered Metal Finish Spray in Silver, going with the hammered finish to give it a more textured look. I sprayed somewhat unevenly intentionally, wanting the black primer to show through in places. I really wanted to try to give it as much of a vintage feel as I could, and the hammered paint gives it so much character and dimension.

I found these vents at our local hardware store for under $3 each.

A trim with some tin snips to the outer edge and to make four individual vents...

I centered them on each door, at the top and bottom, and attached them in with 1/4" screws.

It's still a great little craft cabinet, and it's perfect for housing my little man's many art supplies. He loves a good paint mess as much as his mama!

It's a very simple update, but I am so, so happy with the way it turned out. It strikes the perfect balance of giving the room some flavor while keeping the piece 100% practical (and safe) for a preschooler.

The bonus? It works with his room while it's in the superhero phase, but will obviously be great for a sports theme as well.

Oh, and one more thing...

Go Cards :).
